We Are Family

We Are Family

John 19:25-27

The song “We Are Family,” sung by Sister Sledge, was written by Nile Rodgers and Bernard Edwards. In a way, the song has been enjoyed in a way that points to more, a connection broader than immediate family. In the Old Testament God promised Abraham that he would be the father of many nations and that in his seed all the families of the earth would be blessed, implying adoption of the Gentiles. The New Testament describes the explosion of fulfillment of this prophecy that took place throughout the Roman Empire and continues today, emphasizing family in a way that can sometimes turn our thoughts and our lives outside-in. This Sunday in John 19:25-27, we will see Jesus establishing a mother and son relationship between his mother and the Apostle John, even though Mary had other children besides Jesus who could care for her. Jesus turns thoughts of family outside-in. Although Jesus doesn’t deny the beauty and significance of us having our “own families,” (For example, He still calls us to honor our father and mother and, through His apostles, gives specific instructions to members of households.), He emphasizes the eternal family of God. We who trust in Jesus have been adopted by the same Dad and have become His own dear children. We who trust in Jesus truly are family, eternal family. Jesus undeniably changes the emphasis from Focus on the Family to focus on THE FAMILY.
