Pastor David begins a new sermon series

Pastor David Balzer will begin a new sermon series on Sunday, Nov. 2. The Advent series is titled, “That the Christ would Suffer.” This is what Pastor David says about the series:
The series is about the promise of God throughout the Old Testament that Christ would be God in the flesh and would come to suffer in order to save us. This theme is part of the scandal of the cross. It’s what confounded Peter early on and what he then preached in Acts 3:18, “But those things which God foretold by the mouth of all His prophets, that the Christ would suffer, He has thus fulfilled.”
1 Peter 1:10-11 says, “Of this salvation the prophets have inquired and searched carefully, who prophesied of the grace that would come to you, searching what, or what manner of time, the Spirit of Christ who was in them was indicating when He testified beforehand the sufferings of Christ and the glories that would follow.” In Luke 24:25, Jesus says, “O foolish ones, and slow of heart to believe in all that the prophets have spoken! Ought not the Christ to have suffered these things and to enter into His glory?”
I think that, in part, we are still embarrassed by the suffering of Christ.  At Christmas sometimes we sentimentalize the incarnation of Christ and consequently miss out on the depth of its meaning. We are still surprised by the suffering in our own lives and see it as punishment instead of a badge of union with Christ. I hope this series will help preach the Gospel to us and to our community as we look at God’s repeated promise that the Christ would suffer in love for us.
Join us for worship Sunday and for our monthly lunch afterwards!
